Journaling to Build Resilience

Journaling has a way of making our thoughts more substantial, more concrete, and more permanent.  Just the simple fact of writing things down makes those thoughts more permanent. In my experience, many people use journaling to dwell on negative thoughts. Or they frequently focus on regrets or reworking situations that left them frustrated.  While journaling in those ways can be helpful, I’d like to talk to you about the way where you can use journaling to build your resilience.

I’d like you to take some serious time to think about what you have been through, what you’ve survived, and what you’ve overcome. Because no matter what you’ve been through, here you are. You have survived. Maybe battered. Maybe worn hard by life. But nonetheless, here you are. Start to make a list of what you have been through, of what you have overcome, of what you have endured and survived. Remember those events, those situations, in some detail. Think it through.  Recognize what you have done. To recover, to carry on, to be ready. to learn and grow, from what you’ve gone through.

By recording and documenting. Your history, you are strengthening your resolve. You are underscoring the effort. Appreciating the resilience that you have shown in the past. It makes it so much easier to have confidence in your ability to respond, one more time, resiliently to what the world throws your way. Acknowledge and celebrate your victories.Remember your strong self!
